Philip Barton Key

He served in the British Army in the Revolutionary War, then went to England, where he studied law at the Middle Temple in London before returning to Maryland in 1785. Admitted to the bar, he practiced law in Leonardtown and Annapolis, Maryland. Appointed by President John Adams to the Fourth United States Circuit Court in 1801, he served until 1802, when the court was abolished. He was counsel to Associate Justice Samuel Chase during Chase's impeachment trial in 1805, and he became a United States Representative from Maryland, serving from 1807 to 1813. Originally buried on his estate, "Woodley," in Georgetown, D.C., he was later reinterred at Oak Hill. He was the uncle of Francis Scott Key(bio by: Garver Graver)
