Floyd was the second of the eight children of Clayton and Amy (Tourtlotte) Maxim. By 1905 his family left Pulteney to reside in Rochester, Monroe Co., New York. At the age of fifteen, Floyd worked as a shoemaker. He married Margaret Dillman, the daughter of German immigrants on February 21, 1914 in Rochester. They had three children. Floyd supported his family as a machinist. They lived in Rochester but by 1941 relocated to Spencerport.
