Mr. DeJohn Dies; Father of 5 boxers
Michael De John Sr., 78, of 203 E. Division St., father of five prominent local prize fighters of the 1940's, died yesterday at Community-General -Hospital after a short illness.
He was the father of seven sons, Michael of Miami, Fla., and John, Ralph, Carmen, Louis, Joseph and Thomas DeJohn. John was co-manager of former welterweight and middleweight champion Carmen Basilio, while Ralph, Carmen, Michael, Louis, and Joseph were prominent local prize fighters.
A native of Italy, Mr. DeJohn was a resident here 65 years. He was a retired employe of New Process Gear Co. and a communicant of Our Lady of Pompei Church.
Surviving besides his seven sons, are 16 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 9:45 a.m. Monday at the Farone & Son Funeral Home, 723 James St., and at 10 a.m. in Our Lady of Pompei Church where a high Mass of requiem will be celebrated by the Rt. Rev. Msgr. William L. Walsh. Burial will be in Assumption Cemetery.
Friends may call 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 today and tomorrow at the funeral home.
