Jeanie Gary was the youngest of the four children of Irving Barnes Gary and Sue Peers Collins. She graduated from Randolph Macon Woman's College in 1916. After her husband Edgar Austin died, she returned to work. She served as Director of the Red Cross in Fayetteville and Charlotte. She was the Superintendent of Welfare for Vance Co., and later was Field Supervisor with the NC Dept. of Public Welfare.
