James Renaulder was the eldest child of Rev. Canada C. and Peggie Dovie Oxendine Lowry. He married Lillie Mae Jacobs on Dec. 24, 1929 in the Saddletree section of Robeson County, North Carolina. He was a World War I veteran.

Rev. J. R. Lowry was the former bishop of the Lumbee Methodist conference.
