The father was a carpenter by trade and may have been a ship's carpenter, sailing between Fiji and Australia. One account has them relocating due to the father's health. Sadly, his father died in 1889 at age 41 followed by his mother three years later at age 40. It is unknown who cared for the children.
In 1901 William and Sarah Emily "Minnie" Grier married and had one daughter, Vita Margaret. William himself died in 1909 at the age of 36.
