Born in Laurinburg, N.C., on July 24, 1920, he came to Winter Haven from there in 1952. He was the owner of Polk Tractor Co. He graduated from Presbyterian College. He was an Army veteran of World War II, having served in England and France. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and a former member of the board of directors of Exchange National Bank. He was a member and former deacon of First Baptist Church in Winter Haven.
Mr. James is survived by his wife of 56 years, Frances Buchanan James; daughters, Frances James Brown, Elizabeth James "Bet" Tucker, Susan James Davidson, both of Winter Haven; son, Hinton "Bo" James III, Winter Haven; 10 grandchildren; two greatgrandchildren.
