Adriana "Jennie" Courtland was the daughter of Matthijs Verboom and Willemina Moerer of Schiedam, Province of South Holland, the Netherlands.

Jennie and Dirk Spruijt married in Schiedam in April 1879, and three months later their first child, Pieter Krijn Spruijt, was born. This child passed away when he was only four and a half months old. Three other children--Clara, Pieter Krijn, and Willemina Martina-- were born to Jennie and Dirk before they emigrated to the United States in 1885.

Dirk's eldest brother Pieter Spruijt (1838-1895) had emigrated to the United States in about 1860 and had assumed the name William Courtland. After serving in the Navy, William settled in Iowa for a short time and then in Ludington, Michigan, where he became involved in transporting lumber and conveying tourists across Lake Michigan. He was a licensed commander of steamboats, tugboats, and schooners on the Great Lakes and was widely known as Capt. William Courtland.

When Jennie and Dirk made the decision to emigrate, a logical destination for them was Ludington, Michigan. Since Dirk's brother William had long before assumed the surname Courtland, Dirk did the same.

Once in the United States, the family members assumed their new names: Adriana Verboom (Spruijt) became Jennie Courtland; Dirk Spruijt became Richard "Dick" Courtland; Clara Adriana Spruijt became Clara Adriana Courtland; and Pieter Krijn Spruijt became Carl Peter Courtland.

Four more children were born to Jennie and Dirk in Ludington: Richard "Dick" Courtland; Nathan William "Thijs" Courtland; Jennie Courtland; and John H. Courtland.

At some point in time Jennie's mother, Wilhemina (Moerer) Verboom, moved from Schiedam, the Netherlands, and joined Jennie and her family in Ludington. She had been widowed since 1869.

Dirk passed away in Ludington on May 24, 1898 and was buried in Potter's Field at Lakeview Cemetery. Jennie, impoverished, was left with seven children, one of them (Thijs) an invalid.

Jennie outlived her husband by 47 years. She passed away in Ludington on October 12, 1945 and was buried in Lakeview Cemetery with her son Thijs and her mother Willemina Verboom.
