Lydia was the youngest daughter of James Constantine Porter and Emily Mosley. She was a twin to her brother, Finis. She was married to Thomas Oscar McCrory Cox on 21 Jan 1888 in Sylvia, Reno County, Kansas. They were the parents of 7 children.

Lydia and Thomas lived most of their lives in Indiana before moving to Tulare, Spink County, South Dakota around 1915. However, the 1920 census shows Lydia and Thomas lived in Garber City, Garfield County, Oklahoma, but they apparently moved back to Tulare because Thomas died there in 1923.

After the death of Thomas Oscar Cox, Lydia married Charles (Charlie) Johnson.
