Second Lieutenant Scudder was the pilot
of B-17F Flying Fortress #42-3142, nicknamed
"Buttercup," serving with the 368th Bomb
Squadron, 306th Bomb Group, 8th Air Force
in England during World War II.

He was killed when his plane encountered
severe turbulence in bad weather after
departing for target mission to Germany,
and crashed at Great Haseley, southeast of
Oxford, England.

All ten crew members aboard perished.

2nd Lt. Ewing Shields, III, navigator
2nd Lt. John A Strauser, bombadier
T/Sgt. Sam P Bearden, radio operator
T/Sgt. Harris R Whitten, flt. engineer
S/Sgt. Charles R Nicholson, tail gunner
Sgt. Eustasio C Gonzales, waist gunner
Sgt. Albert A Griepenstroh, waist gunner
Sgt. Albert E Tessier, Jr, ball turret gunner
