Colonel David Robinson (Robison) was the son of Thomas Robison and Rebecca Gardiner
("Lady Rebecca Dongardiner") and brother of Jane Robison James. He was born shortly after his parent's arrival from Scotland.

Colonel Robinson married Mary Moore (the only daughter of Captain James B. Moore) on December 4, 1806 in the Bellefontaine, Illinois settlement on the southern edge of the modern-day city of Waterloo, Illinois. They had fourteen children (six daughters and eight sons).

David Robinson was a lieutenant in the company of his brother-in-law, Captain James B. Moore, in the war of 1812-14, and was afterward appointed by Governor Ninian Edwards a colonel of militia.
