BIO: by Karla Todd Sherer

John Calvin Moore, M.D., a native of Gibson County, TN, was born on the 19th of February, 1852, son of David W. And Margaret Clements Moore. Until 1870, John lived on his father's farm. He attended school at Milan, Trenton, and McKenzie, and in 1873, he became a Disciple of Aesculapius, under the direction of Dr. Leroy Love McAliley, of Gibson Co. Dr. McAliley was his brother-in-law. In the fall of the same year, he entered the medical department of the University of Louisville in Kentucky, and graduated from that institution in 1875. He then returned home to Gibson Co. and practiced his profession until 1880. At that time, he attended one course of lectures at the Jefferson Medical College of Philadelphia, Penn., graduating from the same in 1881. He returned to Gibson Co, TN, and continued practicing medicine until approximately 3 years prior to his death. He was considered a well-read and successful practitioner by his patrons and brother physicians. He was a member of the Gibson County Medical Society.

On 10 Aug 1876, he was married to Mattie Presh Robertson, daughter of William and Elizabeth Getzendanner Robertson, of Gibson County. They had 5 sons and 1 daughter and they are:

Cecil Albert Moore 1879 – 1968
William Leslie Moore 1883 – 1972
John Norton Moore M.D. 1886 – 1964
R D Moore 1889 – 1909
Linden E Moore 1892 – 1914
Ouida Anne Moore 1899 – 1985

Dr and Mrs. Moore were members of the Missionary Baptist Church.

NOTE: Mattie & John's headstone has a mistake on their birth years. All records reflect them born in 1852 for him and 1858 for her. This includes all Fed. Census records during their lifetime and their death certificates as well as John's bio done by Goodspeed on the Gibson County page of the USGenWeb site and in a book that gives his bio. If anyone has a difference of opinion, I'm open to view that record so please feel free to submit. John was my great grand uncle.

Rest peacefully....
