On October 29, 1910, while a junior in high school, Ruth eloped with her high school sweetheart, Casper 'Cap' Joshua Smith, to Monroe, Michigan.
Ruth liked to write poems and had some published. She liked to fish and she and Cap did a lot of fishing. She was a member of the First United Presbyterian Church and the Order of the Eastern Star.

Do not waste time reminiscring..
Sighing for the "good old days"
But, instead, be up and doing -
Make the most of each new day!
If your hopes and dreams are shattered,
If misfortune comes your way,
Do not wallow in self-pity,
Start anew this very day!
Do not cross tomorrow's bridges,
Don't regret your yesterday:
Live each day, and live it fully
Live and love, and work and pray!
Give the very best that's in you
To each thing you do or say:
If you'll let this be your motto,
You'll have no regrets today!
