Headline: Brief Illness is Fatal to O.M. May
Obed M. May, 76, of 3525 N. Market St., owner of Dixieaire Air Conditioning Co. Inc. of Shreveport, died at 2 p.m. Sunday in Schumpert Hospital after a brief illness.
Mr. May served from 1943 to 1946 as director of state institutions in Baton Rouge and in 1951 became director of the Price Administration Office in the Shreveport district. He served in that post until the office was closed in 1952. He then resumed full control of the air conditioning firm which he founded in 1938. He retired in 1966. Mr. May and a partner established the company and Mr. May later bought out his partner's interest to operate the company as sole owner.
Mr. May was born Nov. 3, 1890, in Brookhaven, Miss., and was educated in the Brookhaven public schools. He attended the Harris Business College in Jackson, Miss., and Mississippi State College. He served as a regimental sergeant major in France during World War I and received his discharge from the U.S. Army in 1919. After the war, Mr. May came to Shreveport where he was employed by the Standard oil Co. in the accounting department. He served as secretary of the Shreveport Chamber of Commerce before serving as institutions director.
32nd DEGREE MASON
Mr. May was a 32nd degree Mason and was past master of Blue Lodge W.H. Booth No. 380. He was a post commander of the Ascension Commandery No. 6 and was a member of the Knights Templar and El Karubah Shrine Temple.
He served for five years as chairman of the Civil Service Commission board for the municipal fire and police departments in Shreveport. He was a member of the Shreveport Kiwanis Club and was a director of Home Federal Savings Loan Association. Mr. May was a board member of the directors of First Baptist Church.
Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Bessie E. May of Shreveport and five sisters, Mrs. Oscar Oden of Pineville; Mrs. Etta Montgomery of Bogue Chitto, Miss., Mrs. A.C. Crain of Bogalusa, Mrs. W.L. Smith of Vivian and Mrs. David Q. Byrd of Clinton.
Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday in First Baptist CHurch with Dr. James Middleton, pastor of the church, officiating. Burial will be Forest Park under direction of Osborn Funeral Home. Pallbearers will be A.L. Wedgeworth, J.T. Tompkins, Weyland Alfred, Judge H.W. Ayers, Leonard Lackard, Judge William Flenniken, Jim Brannon and Don Brannon.
