JOHN SETON KNUTSON was born in Louisiana or Mississippi, according to his answers on the 1880 Federal Census of Henderson County, Texas, on or about 15 December 1824. He indicated that his father was born in Denmark.

He emigrated to the State of Texas in the early 1850s,where he met and married Matilda Angeline Donaho in Huntsville, Walker County on November 4, 1852. To this marriage were born four sons and five daughters.

This family spent a great portion of time in the town of Malakoff, Henderson County. The exact site of burial for John Seton is not known but the town of Malakoff was chosen for this memorial since it was their home for a time.

We have not found the exact time nor place of his death. The last known communication was a telegram (dated 1901) to James Monroe Knutson,(his son) in Athens, Henderson County, Texas, from an unknown person to the effect that his father was dying.
