US Congressman. Born in Nashville, Tennessee, he moved with his parents to Louisiana in 1825, attended Augusta College Kentucky, in 1842 and studied law at Nashville University, in 1845. He served in the War with Mexico in 1846, as orderly Sergeant in the 2nd Regiment, Louisiana Volunteers and was a member of the Louisiana State House of Representatives, (1847-49). After the war, graduated from the law department of the University of Louisiana in 1850, was admitted to the bar and practiced law in Iberville and East Baton Rouge Parishes. He again was elected to the Louisiana State House of Representatives in 1853 and was Louisiana State auditor of public accounts, (1857-62). During the Civil War, he served as Captain of a company which he had raised for the 27th Regiment, Louisiana Infantry, Cinfederate Army. After the war, he resumed the practice of law in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. In 1877, he was elected as a Democrat to the Forty-fifth, Forty-sixth, and Forty-seventh Congresses, serving until 1883. An unsuccessful candidate for renomination, he was again elected to the Fiftieth Congress in 1887 and served until his death at age 64.
