United States Senator, New Mexico Territory Governor. He participated in the Yellowstone Expedition in 1819 to 1820, a follow-up survey for Lewis and Clark expedition led by Col. John O'Fallon. He served as Kentucky Secretary of State, 1851; U.S. Senator in 1852 following death of Henry Clay and appointed by President Franklin Pierce as Governor of the New Mexico territory from 1853 to 1857.
