U.S. Congressman. Born in Unionville, Pennsylvania, he taught school in Marietta, in 1847, graduated from the medical department of the University of Pennsylvania, in 1852 and opened a medical practice in Bristol, Bristol, Pennsylvania. During the Civil War, he served as a physician without compensation at the US General Hospital in Beverly, New Jersey. After the war, he was president of the Mechanics’ National Bank of Burlington, until he was elected as a Republican to the Forty-fifth Congress, serving (1877-79). An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he resumed the practice of medicine and served as member of the New Jersey State Board of Education until his death at age 77 in Burlington, New Jersey. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
