William A. Reitz Sr., Grand Street, died Wednesday, May 3, 2011 in the Oneida Healthcare Center where he had been a patient for the past two days.
Born in New Mine, Pa., he was a son of Michael and Agnes Hawk Reitz. A resident of the area since 1948, he was educated in Fairfield schools. He married Alma Stahl on Jan. 3, 1943 in Herkimer.
Prior to his retirement, Bill was employed with Nye Ford and was previously employed with the former Keller Motors and Dunn and Young Ford. He was a sixty-five year member of the Steuben Masonic Lodge, No. 264, a member of the Cherry Valley Carriage Association and Barneveld Horse Association. Mr. Reitz exhibited and trained ponies to drive and won numerous driving competitions.
He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the United States Army in North Africa and Italy.
Surviving are his wife, Alma of sixty-eight years; one son and daughter-in-law, William and Connie Reitz Jr. of Massena; two daughters and one son-in-law, Marcia Reitz and companion, Brian Metcalf of Morristown, Tenn. and Gail and Robert Hartwell of Durhamville; one brother and two sisters-in-law, Robert and Edna Reitz and Reata Stahl, all of Herkimer; one grandson, Keith Reitz, MD of Mission, Kansas; three granddaughters, Catherine Reitz of Victor and Anna Hartwell, PhD and her husband, Luis Barriga of Mission Viejo, Calif. and Heidi von Linden and her husband, Ryan of Schoharie; two great-grandchildren, Lydia and Lucia Barriga, and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by eleven brothers and sisters.
Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m., Saturday, from the Campbell-Dean Funeral Home, Inc., 260 Main St., Oneida. Interment will be made in Rural Park Cemetery, Ingam Mills. Friends may call at the funeral home, 3-7 p.m., Friday. Contributions, in his memory, may be made to the American Red Cross Blood Bank, 636 S. Warren St., Syracuse, NY 13202 or the Oneida Oncology Equipment Fund, Seneca Street, Oneida, NY 13421. Envelopes for this fund may be obtained at the funeral home.
