Nelson Newberry Thompson, 86, of Lyndhurst, passed away on Tuesday, May 3, 2011, at Augusta Nursing and Rehab Center.

He was born on September 21, 1924, in Augusta County, a son of the late Nelson O. and Clara V. Parry Thompson.

Mr. Thompson was a member of Lyndhurst United Methodist Church and retired from the Waynesboro DuPont Plant in 1981. He was a veteran of the United States Marine Corp having two tours of duty from 1941 until 1958. While serving, he received the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star. He enjoyed bowling in the league, fishing, and gardening.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Betty R. Thompson who died on October 2, 1994; four brothers and four sisters.

Survivors include one son, Clyde Nelson "Butch" Thompson and his wife, Terry, of Waynesboro; three daughters, Martha Virginia Huffer and her fiance, Lester Oberg of Powhatan, Carolyn Ann Loving of Waynesboro, Deborah Ray Miller and her husband, Bill, of Waynesboro; six grandchildren, Richard Nelson Breeden of Spottsvania, Stephen D. Breeden of Arlington, Sherry L. Hammer of Stuarts Draft, Jenny Cline of Verona, Kellie Miller of Waynesboro and Trish Simpson of Porter, Texas; eleven great-grandchildren, Justin, Donovan, Austin, Kaitlyn, Alex, Caleb, Christian, Joey, Kalli, Camden and Conner.

A service will be conducted 10 a.m. Saturday, May 7, 2011, at the Waynesboro Chapel of Reynolds Hamrick Funeral Homes with Pastor Larry Black officiating. Burial will follow at Augusta Memorial Park. American Legion Post 340 will conduct military rites at the graveside.

Active pallbearers will be Richard and Stephen Breeden, Travin Cline, Anthony Winegar, Eddie Major and Matt Baylor.

The family will receive friends from 7 until 8 p.m. Friday, May 6, 2011, at Reynolds Hamrick Funeral Homes of Waynesboro and other times at the homes of his children.

In lieu of flowers , contributions may be made to the Waynesboro First Aid Crew, 201 West Broad Street, Waynesboro, VA 22980, Blue Ridge Chapel Church of the Brethren Building Fund, 19 Browns Lane, Waynesboro,VA 22980 or the Dooms Fire Company, P.O. Box 836, Waynesboro, VA 22980.
