Commodore Wood (1924-2011)
TISHOMINGO, Okla. - Commodore Robert Wood IV, 86, went to be with his Lord on Friday, April 29, 2011.
Commodore was born on Sept. 9, 1924, to Annie Lee Reed and Philip Commodore Wood. He was delivered at home in Tulsa, Okla. by his grandfather, Dr. Commodore Robert Wood III.
Commodore's family moved to the Tishomingo, Okla. area after the loss of his father and settled on Washita Farm. He graduated from Tishomingo High School in 1943 and went immediately to serve his county in World War II. He enlisted in the Army Air Force as gunner and radar operator. He completed 23 missions over enemy occupied Europe. Upon returning to the United States, Commodore served for the next 16 years in the Oklahoma, Arkansas and Texas National Guard retiring from service in 1961.
Commodore attended college at Murray State College in Tishomingo, Okla., and the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville, Ark.
Commodore moved to Denison in the early 1950s where he met the love of his life, Eva Lois Schnitker. They married February 28, 1953 in Durant, Okla. They had three children: Tish, Neill, Toni. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. Over the years, he cherished and remains close to extended family and friends.
Commodore spent most of the remainder of his life in radio broadcasting. He was blessed by being known as the "Voice of the Denison Yellow Jackets" and excelled in sports broadcasting, which was his passion.
Commodore was a faithful member of the Mirick Avenue Church of Christ. He was also a member of the Denison Chamber of Commerce and Denison Rotary Club. He had recently received his "30 Year Perfect Attendance" award from the Denison Rotary Club. After retirement from radio, Commodore spent his Thursdays reading to elementary age students at Hyde Park Elementary School, where he was known as "PeePaw". He was employed as a salesman for Reinert Paper & Chemical since 1990.
Commodore is survived by son Tish Wood of San Jose, Calif., son Neill Wood of Los Gatos, Calif.; daughter and neighbor Toni Reinert and husband Randy of Denison; grandchildren, Josh Reinert, Gabriel Carter, James Reinert Danielle Reinert, Mandi Carter and Nicholas Carter; great-grandchild Riley Reinert.
Commodore was preceded in death by his wife, Eva Lois; father Philip C. Wood; mother Annie Wood Lowry; and stepfather George Lowry; sister Willie Estelle Hoedebeck; brother Dewitt Wood; and son-in-law Jimmie Lee Carter, Jr.
Services will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, May 5, 2011 at Park Avenue Church of Christ officiated by Richard Gage. Graveside service will be at Calvary Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Joshua Reinert, James Reinert, Gregory Korioth, Larry Durbin, Zak Nix and Phil Hoedebeck. Honorary pallbearers will be Steve Armstrong, Stephen O. Bruno, George Edwards, Gene Hoedebeck, Bob White and Dwaine Wood.
Rosary will be prayed at 6 p.m. Wednesday, May 4 with family night immediately following at 7 p.m. at Bratcher Funeral Home.
