James Nelson Burnes
Birth: Aug. 22, 1827
Marion County
Indiana, USA
Death: Jan. 23, 1889
District of Columbia
District Of Columbia, USA

US Congressman. In 1837, he moved to Platte County, Missouri and graduated from the Harvard Law School in 1853. Admitted to the bar, he commenced to practice law in Missouri. He was Attorney of the District of Missouri in 1856 and served as judge of the court of common pleas, (1868-72). He also engaged in the construction of railroads, served as president of the Missouri Valley Railroad Company and was owner-president of the St. Joseph Waterworks Company. In 1883, he was elected as a Democrat to the Forty-eighth, Forty-ninth and Fiftieth Congresses and served until his death at age 61.

Hon. James N. Burnes' remains were consigned to the tomb with simple
ceremonies, but by a distinguished company of the friends of the deceased,
at St. Joseph, last Sunday. Senators Vest, Coke and Teller;
Representatives, Mansor, Stone, Wade, Morrill, Sayers, Bynum, Henderson;
Gov. Francis, Senator Walter Young, Ex-Secretary of State McGrath and other
gentlemen from a distance, beside all the local civil and military
dignitaries were present. Col. Burnes was a Methodist, and the service was
conducted by the Rev. A.G. Dunwiddie, pastor of the church of which he was
a member. There was general mourning over his loss, and none more sincere
than that of the poor to whom he had been a benefactor.
