Catherine Elony Baker was born 1850 in Tarboro, Edgecombe County, NC the 2nd of 5 known children (1 boy/4 girls) born to wealthy phyisican/planter William Sparkman Baker and his (2nd) wife, Sarah Rebecca Powell. Her middle name is in honor of her paternal grandmother, Elony Garrett, wife of Moses Baker of Tarboro.

Her father had married (1st) in 1831 to Julia Shurley, daughter of wealthy planter, Henry Shurley, and after Julia died in 1845 he married her mother, who was 19 years younger than him. At the time of this second marriage, Dr. Baker had 3 children from his first marriage who were part of the newlyweds household.

Catherine's father died in 1861 and 3 years later her mother died, leaving Kate, then aged 14, and her 3 sisters orphaned. They were taken in and raised by her maternal aunt, Mary Harrison Powell, wife of wealthy Tarboro merchant William Mayo Pippen. The girls lived in luxury at elegant Victorian home of William Pippen, now known as the historic "Pippen House" on Main Street.

Kate was 21 years old on November 13, 1872 when she married 22-year old physician, Dr. Lycurgus Lafayette Staton of Tarboro. They resided in Tarboro and would become parents to 3 known children:

* Henry Staton (1872-1952)
* Sally B. Staton (1875-1962)
* Adolphus Staton, Rear Adm. (1879-1964)

Kate's husband was a wealthy, successful and respected surgeon, planter, and businessman and the couple were in the upper echelons of county society. Kate was involved in her church and community and was a member of the local chapter of the Daughters of the Confederacy, which worked hard to erect a memorial statue that still stands today in the Town Commons of Tarboro.

Kate was widowed in 1921 when her husband of almost 50 years died at age 72. She survived him about 3 years, passing in 1924 at about age 74.

For information on what became of her children, see her husband's memorial.
