John Clark Coward was born 11 July 1894 in Cowarts, NC, the fifth of twelve children of Robert Rogers Coward (1866-1943) and Lena Allen Coward (1869-1969). He was a WWI Army veteran. He first married Anna Sue Epps (1900-1935) on 18 December 1917 in Greenville, SC. They had one son, Harry Nathan Coward (1919-2009) born in Hendersonville, NC. They divorced around 1919. He then married Lessie Sue Matthews (1896-1977) on 14 April 1926 in Rockingham, NC. He worked as a farmer in Abbeville County, SC. They had four sons: Vernon Lester (1928-2021), Robert Earl (1932-1995), and twins, Ray and Roy (b.1936). Lessie died in 1977, and Clark died 20 October 1979 in Calhoun Falls, SC at the age of 85.

Abbeville, South Carolina—John Clark Coward, age 85, of Route 1, Warrenton community, Calhoun Falls, died Saturday, October 20, 1979.
Born in Jackson County, North Carolina, he was a retired farmer, an Army veteran of World War I, and an Elder Emeritus of Warrenton Presbyterian Church.
Surviving are sons,Vernon Lester Coward of Marietta, Georgia, Robert Earl Coward of Richmond, Virginia, Roy Landis Coward of Spartanburg, and Ray Francis Coward of Columbia; a brother, Glenn Coward of Belton; sisters, Mrs. Bland Lippard of Burkeville, Virginia, and Mrs. Ollie McKnight of St. Petersburg, Florida; nine grandchildren.
Services will be at 3:00 p.m. Monday, October 22nd at Warrenton Presbyterian Church; burial in Greenwood Memorial Gardens.—Harris Funeral Home.
