Son of Dr. Thomas Bates Anderson and Harriet Anderson. He graduated from Hampden-Sydney College and then from the Medical College of Virginia in 1844. He married Edmonia Thomasia Trevillian on 4 Feb 1846. He bought a tract of land near Hewlett and named it Elon. He built a home there and also gave land for Elon Baptist Church and the nearby school. The home, Elon, has stood empty for years.
He led Capt. Linnaeus B. Anderson's Company, Virginia Local Defense Troops and was a man of broad scholarly attainments. Possessing a wonderful range of knowledge, he was a constant student who owned a vast library. He was an able writer and fluent speaker, whose views were not the opinions of others, but his own logical deductions gained from research and investigation. He authored "Brief Biography of Virginia Physicians."
