February 8, 1915 ~ April 24, 2011
SEASIDE - Nina L. Smith went home to Heaven on Easter Sunday, April 24, 2011. She was 96 years old. Nina moved to the Monterey Peninsula when she was five years old with her parents and spent the remainder of her years in Seaside. She had nine siblings who predeceased her. Nina met her husband, Dean Smith, at the dancehall her father owned where the Del Monte Skating Rink is currently located. She also worked in the Monterey canneries. Dean and Nina were married for 51 years prior to his death in 1986.
Nina is survived by her children: Lavena Challender of Reno, Gerald Smith (Patricia) of Seaside, and Dale Smith (Laura) of Aptos. She is also survived by 11 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren and 11 great-great grandchildren. Nina was fondly called "Nana" by her children and grandchildren.
Nina loved a good garage sale and spent many weekends hunting for bargains, then washing and pressing her finds to give away. She loved playing many card games with her friends and family, hosting family dinners and poker parties, and gambling trips. Nina bowled for years on the Queen Pins league at Monterey Lanes and spent years crocheting beautiful things to give to others. She had a heart of gold and was constantly thinking of others but sometimes was very outspoken. Nina was the center of her family and dearly loved. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
Funeral Services will be held Friday, April 29, 2011 at 11:00am at Bayside Community Mortuary, 1610 Noche Buena Street in Seaside, followed by burial at Mission Memorial Park, Seaside.
