Findagrave member CherishedFamily&Friends (who has his/her messages disabled) originally posted this biography data for Narcissa Pouncey, with her burial in the "Butler Cemetery" at Butler Springs, Butler County, Alabama:

"Narcissa Pouncey was the daughter of John Pouncey and Polly Holmes Pouncey. Narcissa was born in Alabama. Narcissa Pouncey married James Brown. According to the 1870 Alabama census, Narcissa and James lived in Greenville, Butler County, Alabama and had the following 4 children: John Brown- born in 1854 Amanda Brown- born in 1856Ursula Brown- born in 1858James Brown- born in 1865"

-------------------------------------------------------

When I suggested that Narcissa's burial details be changed, since there is no "Butler Cemetery" at Butler Springs in northwest Butler County -- therefore Narcissa couldn't be buried there (in a location with which she had no family or residence connection, even if there was such a cemetery) -- CherishedFamily&Friends immediately transferred Narcissa's memorial to me, without explanations or questions.

I don't know how someone first attached Narcissa, wife of James Brown in the 1870 Butler County census, as the daughter of John Pouncey who died in Butler County between the 1850 and 1860 censuses.

Several of John Pouncey's sons were named, but no daughters, in a 1900 family letter transcription that's posted on his Findagrave memorial and in various family trees. This letter was written by George W. Pouncey of Lampasas, Texas, dated January 24, 1900, to Mr. O. K. Pouncey, Bolling, Ala.

The letter writer wrote about Samuel Pouncey (his grandfather): "He had the following sons: John, who died in Butler Co. about the beginning of the civil war. John had A. W. Pouncey, Wm Pouncey, Frank Pouncey, Daniel Pouncey, Calvin and George Pouncey."

There are no probate records listed for John Pouncey in the Butler County Probate Minutes index. Apparently he left no will, though he may have disposed of any land/property through deeds.

In the 1850 Butler County census, John Pouncey was 61 (born about 1789), a blacksmith, born in South Carolina. Nothing was entered in the "Real Estate" value column. Living with him were (daughters) Amanda Pouncy, 23, and Mariah Pouncy, 14, both born in Alabama.

James and Narcissa Brown had children born from about 1854-on, judging by the 1870 census, so they married before about 1853. I can't identify her or her husband in the 1850 census, or her with husband James Brown in 1860 (looking for both their names and children's names with every variation possible). I tried Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas, Arkansas, Tennessee ... every Southern state where they may have lived.

This is the ONLY record I can find with James Brown and wife Narcissa (possibly Pouncey):

1870 United States Federal Census - Greenville, Butler Co., Alabama
Dwelling # 375, Post Office: Greenville
James Brown - 45 (born abt 1825) - Laborer - Cannot read/write - born Alabama
Narcissa Brown - 38 (born abt 1831) - Keeping house - born Alabama
John Brown - 16 (born abt 1854) - Ala
Amanda Brown - 14 (born abt 1856) - Ala
Ursula Brown - 12 (born abt 1858) - Ala
James Brown - 5 (born abt 1865) - Ala

If James and Narcissa married in Butler County, it could have been 1850-1853, and the Butler County courthouse burned in 1853. I haven't found their marriage in any other county including neighboring Lowndes and Montgomery. Montgomery County is where the Pounceys first lived in Alabama, and where James and Narcissa's daughter Ursula/Alabama Brown marriedPhillip W. Obel in 1877.

This daughter's Texas death certificate is the only source I can find that indicates that Narcissa (Ursula), wife of James Brown, was a Pouncey:

Texas, U.S., Death Certificates, 1903-1982
Name: Mrs Ursula Alabama Abel [Obel]
Gender: Female
Race: White
Age: 79
Birth Date: 23 Mar 1857
Birth Place: Montgomery, Alabama
Residence: Mingus, Texas, USA
Death Date: 4 Feb 1937
Death Place: Mingus, Palo Pinto, Texas, USA
Father: John K H Brown
Mother: Ursula Pouncey
Informant: G. H. Obel, Mingus, Texas
Burial: Russell's Chapel cemetery

However, "John K. H. Brown" was the name of the man who appears to have been Alabama Ursula Brown's brother, rather than her father's name.

John K. H. Brown's death certificate says that his father was "James Brown," but the informant (a son) didn't know John's mother's name.

Texas, U.S., Death Certificates, 1903-1982
Name: J. K. H. Brown
Gender: Male
Race: White
Age: 85
Occupation: Farmer
Birth Date: Feb. 18, 1852
Birth Place: Alabama
Residence: Spanish Fort, Texas, USA
Death Date: Sept. 13, 1937
Death Place: Spanish Fort, Montague, Texas, USA
Father: James Brown
Birthplace: Alabama
Mother's name: "Don't know"
Birthplace: Alabama
Spouse: Mary Gordon
Informant: Jim Brown, Nocona, Texas

John K. H. Brown named a daughter "Arsula" (Ursula), which suggests a connection to a sister/mother of that name, which fits the James & Narcissa Brown family. Their daughter Ursula Alabama Brown and son John Brown were both born in Alabama in the approximate years that were given on their Texas death certificates.

These are NOT my ancestors, but I'll be glad to add appropriate (and correct) biographical data to Narcissa if anyone has sources and information to share.
