J. Ray Cox, Jr., a resident of Coeur d'Alene and Hayden Lake for more than 50 years, passed away Tuesday afternoon, June 9, 2009, in Federal Way, Wash.
Born in Ogden, Utah, J. Ray graduated from Ogden High School and entered the U.S. Navy in 1943. While leading the USO dance band at the Farragut Naval Base, Ray lost his heart to talented Coeur d'Alene singer and dancer Frances Ericksen. When Ray returned from service in the South Pacific and Okinawa, he and Frances were married in Coeur d'Alene on April 21, 1946. J. Ray predeceased only three weeks ago by his beloved wife. He and Frances are survived by their five children; Jeff Cox, Kathy Cox Green, Steve Cox, Claudia Cox Gehri, Norma Cox Brown, 19 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
After his marriage, J. Ray received his degree in Law from the University of Idaho. He served as student body president at three institutions: Weber College, North Idaho Junior College and U of I. J. Ray entered law practice in Coeur d'Alene in 1953 and practiced there until his retirement in 2002. Mr. Cox had a distinguished political career. He served in the Idaho State Senate from 1957 to 1962, and in the latter session was elected minority leader of the Senate. Mr. Cox represented the Democratic Party as candidate for Attorney General in 1962, and for the U.S. House of Representatives in 1972. Mr. Cox also served on the Idaho State Board of Education as an appointee of Governor Cecil Andrus.
North Idaho residents will also remember J. Ray and Frances as immensely talented entertainers who left us all with the gifts of their joyous music. Mr. and Mrs. Cox were active members of the Avondale Golf Club and the Elks Club. J. Ray was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormon) and worked diligently with Frances in the temples in Bellevue, Wash. and Washington, D.C.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, June 20, 2009, at the LDS Church at 477 E. Honeysuckle Ave., Hayden Lake, Idaho. Burial to follow at Coeur d'Alene Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
