Peter first came to the US in 1864, bringing two sons, John Rudolf and Enno Hinrich and buying a timber farm nw of Burlington, Iowa. He returned to Germany, sold his house and farm and sailed with his wife and remaining children on the ship "Hansa". After living some years on this farm they sold and moved near Danville, Iowa until some time in 1874 they moved to West Burlington, Iowa. About 1880 they moved to Wayne County, locating east of Lewisburg, Iowa. Ten of the eleven children were married and lived nearby. Ida was still residing at home. Peter Berends Hulsebus and his wife were very devout members of the German Lutheran Church. They and their children spoke german. Peter lived on this farm in Wayne County until his death March 5, 1891.
