John was married twice, his first wife was Mary who he married July 15, 1866, in Baldwin, County, Alabama. She died March 08, 1904. His second wife was Callie Francis Hawkins.
According to the 1870 Censua, he was born in New York, his parents in Canada ( French) The original spelling of his last name was St Esprit. John served in the Civil War in the Union Army...

October 1924 newspaper reported that "Mr. John Sanspree celebrated his 92nd birthday October 18th with a 12 o'clock nice dinner served and 72 people present, including his relatives and friends. Mr. Sanspree can get about very well with a walking stick. He lives about 1 1/2 mile SW of Deer Range."...
