ROCKVILLE, WEST ROCKPORT - Manford Otis Gilbert, Jr., 68, husband of Barbara L. (Philbrook) Gilbert, died Friday, Jan. 5, 1996, at a Rockport hospital after a long illness.
Born in Orono, Feb. 6, 1927, he was the son of Manford O. Sr. and Virginia (Voutour) Gilbert. He was educated in Bangor schools and played basketball with the Bangor High School team. Mr. Gilbert was a World War II, U.S. Army veteran. The Gilberts were married in Camden on May 11, 1971, and had since made their home in that area. For more than 22 years, Mr. Gilbert served as a sales representative with the American Steel & Aluminum Co. At the beginning of his employment with the company, his sales territory covered the entire state of Maine. More recently and until his retirement in 1990, he covered the company's Bangor to Edmondton, New Brunswick territory. He was an avid fly fisherman, fly tier, golfer and is remembered by his family as a world class grandpa. He was a past master and present member of the St. Paul's Lodge of Masons of Rockport; a member of Kora Temple of Lewiston, the Mid-Coast Shrine Club, the American Legion of Camden, and the Goose River Golf Club of Rockport. He was a devoted member and 1995-1996 term president of the Winnie Dean Association of Machias.
In addition to his wife of Rockville, Mr. Gilbert is survived by his children, Michael Gilbert of Hampden, Deborah Hitchborn of Carmel, Patricia Mower, Nancy Gilbert, both of Bangor, Gary Gilbert of Derry, N.H.; his stepchildren, Donald Aston and Warner Aston, both of Warren, Derek Aston of Kennesaw, Ga., Margaret Aston of Islesboro, Gordon Aston Jr., Betty Reed of New Durham, N.H., 16 grandchildren, two great-granchildren.
A gathering to celebrate Mr. Gilbert's life will be held 7-9 p.m Wednesday, Jan. 10, from the Burpee-Strong Funeral Home, 110 Limerock St., Rockland. A Masonic service will be conducted by St. Paul's Lodge of Masons at 7:30 p.m. Spring interment will be in Seaview Cemetery, Rockport. Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 52 Federal St., Brunswick 04011.
