Sgt. John P. Castro, 25, of Andrews, Texas died April 22 at Paktika province, Afghanistan of wounds suffered when his unit was attacked by small arms fire. He was assigned to1st Battalion, 506th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division, Fort Campbell, Ky. Sgt Castro joined the military in October of 2004, and arrived at Fort Campbell in January of 2006. He was the receiptant of numerous medals which include: Bronze Star, Purple Heart, Army Commendation w/combat, Army Commendation, Army Good Conduct, National Defense Service, Afghanistan Campaign Medal w/ Bronze Service Star, Iraq Campaign Medal w/ Bronze Service Star, Global War on Terrorism Service, Army Service Ribbon, NATO and Army Meritorious Unit Commandation. He is survived by, wife, Delia Castro of Clarksville, TN; daughter, Natalia Castro of Fort Benning, GA; stepson, Kamren Buchholz of Clarksville, TN; mother, Carmen Castro of Andrews, TX; father, David Castro of Odessa, TX; sister, Blanca Castro of Dallas, TX and brother, David Castro of Dallas, Texas; grandmother, Teresa Armendariz of Andrews, Texas and many aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends who loved him.
