Rock Musician. He was a founding member and lead guitarist of the music group The Rivieras. Formed in 1962, they initially were called The Playmates. However, a group of the same name already existed so they renamed themselves The Rivieras after the 1962 car model the Buick Riviera. A recording session produced their classic "California Sun" under the Riviera label featuring Pennell's guitar playing. The hit peaked at number 5 on the US Pop Charts during the outbreak of the "British Invasion" in February 1964. Prior to the record's release, Pennell left the group to serve with the US Marine Corps during the Vietnam War. Following his return home, strayed from the entertainment industry and became a painter. (bio by: C.S.)
