OBITUARY:

SACO -- On Wednesday, July 21, 2010, John C. Blunt of 121 Buxton Rd., Saco, died peacefully after a short battle with cancer at Evergreen Mannor. He was born in Woonsocket, R.I., Aug. 12, 1922, the son of Chester Arthur and Mathilda (Lambert) Blunt. In 1947, as a cute young sailor, he married Mary E. Libby of Saco. He served in the U.S. Navy as Seaman First Class in the armed guard unit defending seven convoy crossing to the African, Asian and European Theaters during World War II. For his heroics, he received several stars and metals of honor. He worked at the Portsmouth Naval shipyard as a Shop 72 rigger for 33 years, retiring in 1981. Surviving are his wife Mary of 63 years; two sons, John S. Blunt and his wife Carolyn of Saco, and Charles R. Blunt and his wife Debbie of Kennebunk; brother Joseph of Florida; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his son Chester; brothers, Ernie and Arthur, and sisters, Ethel White and Annette Turner. He enjoyed boating, lobstering, fishing, hunting and gardening. He was a long time member of the Saco Yacht Club, Camp Ellis Rod and Gun Club, VFW, and charter member of the Saco River Salmon Club. He will be remembered by his family and friends as always willing to lend a helping hand, even at age 87. Visiting hours will be on Sunday at Dennett, Craig and Pate Funeral Home, 365 Main St., Saco, from 3 to 6 p.m. Funeral services will be on Monday at 1 p.m. at Trinity Episcopal Church in Saco. Following the church service there will be a military interment at Saco's Laurel Hill Cemetery followed by a mercy meal back at Trinity Episcopal Church for family and friends.
