U.S. Congressman. Known as "Farmer Bob", he was prosperous as a farmer and banker. He was a member of the North Carolina State board of agriculture, (1903-09), served in the North Carolina State Senate, (1908-09), director of the North Carolina State prison board, (1909-11) and president of the Deposit & Savings Bank, North Wilkesboro. In 1911, he was elected as a Democrat to the Sixty-second Congress and to the next twenty succeeding Congresses, serving until 1953. Not a candidate for re-nomination, he returned to his previous business interest until his death at age 90.
