John left Northern Ireland to come to America with three siblings and his parents. His father died at sea "of a broken heart". The family settled in Carlisle, PA with cousins. After marrying Agnes Farquer he moved to Pittsburgh with his mother and bride. John Irwin operated a store at Fourth and Market St. They were devoted members of the First Presbyterian Church at Wood and 6th Streets. He built the Erin Hill Estate one mile east of the "point" off Centre Ave. He was originally buried at the First Presbyterian Church Cemetery. His remains were moved to Allegheny Cemetery on Sept. 19, 1851 when widow Agnes bought the Agnes Irwin Plot 19-16.
Another child was John Scull Irwin (1798-1836). He was a medical doctor graduating from the Western Pennsylvania University in 1820. He was probably buried at the First Presbyterian Church Graveyard.
John Scull Irwin's eponymous son moved to Fort Wayne, IN about 1853 with his family, sister Charlotte Rose Irwin (1826-1892) and widowed mother Mary Davis Irwin (1799-1863).
Mary Davis Irwin upon her death in 1863 was buried in Pittsburgh, PA. In Nov 1895 John S Irwin, Jr. had the remains of his father and mother removed and reburied in his family plot H, Lot 46 in Lindenwood Cemetery Fort Wayne, IN.
