U.S. Congressman. He studied law, was admitted to the bar and commenced to practice law in Tiffin, Ohio. Entering politics, He served as Auditor of Seneca County, Ohio, for six years. In 1851, he was elected as a Democrat to the Thirty-second and Thirty-third Congresses, serving until 1855. Not a candidate for re-nomination, he served as clerk of the United States District Court for the Northern District of Ohio, (1855-66), was editor of the Cleveland Plain Dealer, (1866-74) and as the Ohio State oil inspector, from 1878, until his death at age 63.
