Thomas Holden (James, Justinian, Richard), of Barre, born 26 Oct., 1723 in Worcester, killed in action, 11 Nov. 1778.

Thomas Holden of Barre, enlisted 21 Aug., 1777, upon the call for re enforcements for Stark at Bennington. Although his company, Nye's in Sparhawk's regiment, marched the same day, there proved no need of their services and the men were dismissed August 25th, having traveled 96 miles allowed. He again enlisted same company 26 Sept. 1777, on call for re enforcement for the Northern Army, and was discharged 18 Oct. having travel home 128 miles allowed. He again enlisted , from the 7th Worcester regiment for during the war and joined Capt. Reed's company, Alden's regiment, and served in the Continental Army from 13 March until 11 Nov., 1778, when he was reported killed. (Mass. Rev. Rolls).
On the 11 Nov. 1778 a party of Tories, Indians and Regulars commanded by Butler raided Cherry Valley. The fort was commanded by Maj. Whiting of Dedham. Col. Alden and Thomas Holden of his command were killed and Lt. Aaron Holden (His brother) taken prisoner. (Frank Moore's Diary of the Revolution, 2: 165)

(I believe that the following was mistakenly credited to the wrong Thomas Holden b: 1759, should have been Thomas Holden b: 1723)

Thomas Holden killed Nov. 11, 1778 at Cherry Valley, NY, at the time his brother Aaron was taken prisoner. He enlisted Aug. 21, 1777 in Captain Nye's company, Sparhawk's regiment, and the same day marched to re-enforce General Stark at Bennington. There proving no need of the services of this command, it was dismissed Aug 25, having 96 miles travel home allowed. He again enlisted Sept. 26, 1777 in the same company and marched to re-enforce the Northern Army. He was discharged Oct. 18. The following March 13 he enlisted out of the Seventh Worcester County regiment and joined Captain Reed's company. Colonel Alden's regiment, which was stationed at Cherry Valley to protect that settlement from the Bristish and Indians. On the 11th of Nov. 1778 the garrison of 250 men were surprised, thirty killed, forty taken prisioner, who with many inhabitants were carried to Canada. Colonel Alden was slain in his quarters, but Major Whiting defended the fort, which Lieut. Aaron Holden vainly attempted to reach.
