Clara L. Bates was born March 15, 1903, to Daniel and Bertha (Dole) Massengill at Willard, MO and passed away at the Beaver City Manor in Beaver City, NE on January 19, 1990.

As a small girl she moved with her mother and grandparents to eastern Colorado where she attended country school, graduating from Colorado Springs High School in 1923.

She attended Greeley State Teachers College and taught school 2-1/2 years.

She was baptized into the Evangelico Church.

She was united in marriage to Joe Bates on December 30, 1926, at Colorado Springs.

Two children were born to this union: Farrel and Joyce, both of Beaver City.

In the fall of 1929 they moved to Beaver City. Joe and Clara started the Dairy Queen business in 1950 and continued for 18 years.

Clara enjoyed doing for family, making quilts, sewing and crocheting.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Joe; step-father C. D. Fimple; and a son-in-law Dwight Chesterman. She leaves to mourn her passing a son Farrel Bates and wife, Barbara; a daughter Joyce and her husband Jim Stratton. Three grandsons, Pat Chesterman, Tim and Greg Bates. Three granddaughters, Francis Waite, Nancy Bates and Kathy Fadness and 9 great-grandchildren. Two sisters-in-law, Belle Palmer and Blanche Bates; nieces, nephews and friends.

Funeral services were held at the First Christian Church on January 22, 1990, at 1:30 p.m. with Rev. Dr. William Guthrie officiating.

Organist was Mrs. Steve Fisher. Hymn selections by soloist, Doug Garey, were "In The Garden" and "Beyond The Sunset".

Bearers were Dennis Chesterman, Steve Hunt, Terry Klein, Alan Lamb, Van Lamb and Stephen Shafer.

Interment was in the Mount Hope Cemetery with arrangements by Wenburg Funeral Home.
