Tillie was born at the Goessel Bethsaida Hospital, Goessel, Kansas on December 18, 1923, the daughter of Isaac and Gertrude (Schmidt) Schmidt.
Tillie attended the a country school near Goessel and graduated as Valedictorian from Goessel High School, Goessel, Kansas. She attended Bethel College, Newton, Kansas to receive her Teachers Certificate and 40 years later graduated from McPherson College, McPherson, Kansas in 1979 with a bachelors degree in Business Administration.
Tillie was a member of First Mennonite Church McPherson, Kansas.
Tillie taught school at Goessel, Kansas; was a homemaker; and along with her husband was the owner and operator of Schroeder Fertilizer Feed and Seed. After retirement she was a Tax Preparer for Carol D. Winslow.
Tillie was a 4-H leader for many years with several different clubs and enjoyed traveling, quiliting, and gardening.
Mathilda "Tillie" Schmidt was united in marriage to Robert M. Schroeder on June 30, 1946 at Tabor Mennonite Church, Grenfeld, Kansas. Robert died on January 13, 1975.
Surviving family members include her children, Sherry D. Tolle and her husband Gordon of Grants, New Mexico, Kenneth L. Schroeder and his wife Connie Lee of McPherson, Kansas, Jimmy D. Schroeder and his wife Barbara of Hastings, Minnesota, Connie Jo Sullivan and her husband Max of Rochester, Minnesota, Rodney M. Schroeder and his wife Gloria of McPherson, Kansas, and Bradley J. Schroeder and his wife Polly of Wichita, Kansas; her special companion, Kenneth Walker of McPherson, Kansas; 14 Grandchildren; 28 Great-Grandchildren; and1 Great-Great-Granddaughter; many nieces and nephews, other relatives and a host of friends.
Tillie was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Robert Schroeder; 1 brother, Jacob Schmidt; her sisters, Clara Schmidt, Elva Bartel, Esther Haefke, and Nellie Rempel.
Friends are invited to call on Monday, April 18, 2011 from 4 to 8 p.m. with family present from 6 to 8 p.m. at Glidden - Ediger Chapel, McPherson, Kansas.
The memorial celebration will be held at the First Mennonite Church, McPherson, Kansas, at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, April 19th, with Pastor Kathy Neufeld Dunn officiating.
Private family graveside services will be held at the Buhler Municipal Cemetery West, Buhler, Kansas.
