Doreen J. Gridley died April 2, 2011, after a two-year battle with melanoma. She is survived by her spouse and loving partner of 30 years, Candace Sage, and step-daughter and son-in-law, Jaime and John Surenkamp. Additional survivors include brother Steven Gridley of Johnstown, PA, aunt Jean Martin of Camillus, NY, and cousins Doug Martin of Sarasota, FL, and Jerry Martin of Clearwater, FL. She was preceded in death by her father Joe Gridley and mother-in-law Bettie Bohnenstiehl.
She was born May 17, 1955, in Ithaca, NY, and grew up in upstate New York and Pennsylvania. Doreen earned her bachelor's degree in physics from Slippery Rock University, her master's in engineering physics from the University of Virginia, her masters in business management from Indiana Wesleyan, and her Doctor of Jurisprudence from Indiana University School of Law in Indianapolis.
At the time of her death, Doreen was a director in the legal department at Sony Electronics in San Diego, CA, responsible for a myriad of intellectual property issues. Prior to joining Sony, she was a partner and chair of the intellectual property department at Ice Miller, LLP. Before entering the legal profession in 1991, Doreen was an engineering manager and engineer in a variety of technologies, including robotics, hybrid microelectronics, aerodynamics, and aero-acoustics.
For many years she was deeply involved in Noble of Indiana, an organization dedicated to assisting the developmentally disabled. She also actively supported the Indianapolis Women's Chorus and the University of Virginia's AccessUVA financial aid program. She was a charter season ticket holder to and a huge fan of the Indiana Fever of the WNBA.
A memorial service will be held at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Indianapolis, 615 W. 43rd St., Indianapolis, on Sunday, April 17, 2011, at 2:30 p.m. Please arrive 15 minutes prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Noble of Indiana (www.nobleofindiana.org) or to the AccessUVA fund (campaign.virginia.edu/supportaccessuva).
