Barbara Ann Free, 63, of Frontenac, died at 4:35 p.m., Tuesday, April 5, 2011, in the Vintage Place in Pittsburg where she entered in August of 2010. She was in failing health for 7 years.
She was born July 21, 1947 in Parsons, Kansas, a daughter of Harold E. and Helen M. (Titmus) Brodbeck. She attended schools in Girard and graduated from Girard High School.
She married Michael L. Free on August 16, 1969 in Pittsburg. They divorced and Mr. Free preceded her in death on October 2, 2003.
She worked for 20 years at the Kansas Army Ammunition Plant in Parsons.
She was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church in Girard.
She enjoyed her family, especially her grandchildren, bowling and playing co-ed softball.
Survivors are a daughter, Kirstie Harris of Girard; her grandchildren, Shania, Wade, Riley, and Kaleb; her mother, Helen M. Brodbeck of Girard; her brothers, Leonard and Debbie Brodbeck of Girard and Mike and Mary Brodbeck of McAlester, Oklahoma.
She was preceded in death by her father, Harold E. Brodbeck, on September 1, 1999, her son, Justin Michael Free, on August 31, 2003, and a sister, Carolyn Bentley, on March 21, 1981.
Funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m., Friday at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Girard with Fr. Lawrence Carney officiating. Burial will be in St. Patrick's Cemetery in Walnut, Kansas. The family will receive friends from 7:00 until 8:00 p.m., Thursday at the Smith-Carson-Wall Funeral Home in Girard where friends may call after 2:00 p.m., Thursday.
Memorials are suggested to the Grandchildren's Education Fund and these may be left at the church or the Smith-Carson-Wall Funeral Home, 518 W St. John, Box 258, Girard, 66743.
