Linda Mae Hite Cox, 64, of Jonesborough, TN, passed away at her home Tuesday, April 5, 2011, in the company of her loving family following a prolonged illness.
A lifelong resident of the Harmony Community, Linda was born in Washington County to the late Mr. and Mrs. Harley T. and Francis Dolen Hite, of Fall Branch, TN. She graduated from Fall Branch High School in 1964 and married the love of her life on August 9, 1964.
She was an active member of Harmony Baptist Church, where she relished the opportunity to minister to others as the Director of the Harmony Baptist Church Senior Citizens Ministry. Her passion for serving others led her to become a special caregiver to shut-ins through the church's meal ministry.
In addition to her unrelenting compassion for others, she organized numerous fundraisers and dinners for both Harmony Baptist Church and the Harmony Community, often encouraging others to serve by her selfless example. She served as the Director of Creative Cooking for The Appalachian Fair as well as a Failsafe Judge for the Washington County Election Commission.
In 2007, her hard work was recognized by the community when she earned the Legion of Honor Award from the Chapel of Four Chaplains. The Legion of Honor Award program publicly recognizes and honors outstanding members of society whose lives model the giving spirit and unconditional service to community, nation, and humanity without regard to race, religion, or creed exemplified so dramatically by the Four Chaplains.
Linda is survived by her husband of 46 years, Perry Leon Cox, of Jonesborough. She is survived by two children, daughter, Annette Michelle Cox Jackson and husband, James Christopher, of Jonesborough; and son, Jeffrey Leon Cox and wife, Jina, also of Jonesborough. She is survived by one sister, Mary H. Archer and husband, Tony, of Fall Branch, and one sister-in-law, Glenda Cox Byrd and husband, Stanley, of Gray. She is survived by an aunt, Beulah Jones, of Fall Branch. She is survived by five grandchildren, Logan and Sydney Cox and Kimberly and Ronnie Jackson, of Jonesborough, and Danielle Jackson Knipp, of Greeneville.. She is survived by one great-grandson, Tristan Knipp, of Greeneville. She is survived by two nieces, Christy Archer Parks (Chris,) of Fall Branch, Kimberley Byrd Walters (Frank), of Jonesborough; and one nephew, Rusty Byrd, of Louisville, KY; along with several great nieces and great nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, the late Harley T. and Francis Dolen Hite, of Fall Branch.
Visitation hours will be from 5:00 PM-8:00 PM followed by a Celebration of Life at 8:00 PM Thursday, April 7, 2011, at Harmony Baptist Church Family Life Center, 1177 Harmony Road, Jonesborough, TN, officiated by pastors Steve Pate and Harold Morelock. Music will be provided by Ken Harris and Amy Culbertson.
Graveside services will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, April 8, 2011, at Harmony Baptist Church Cemetery. Anyone wishing to attend the graveside please meet at the cemetery at 10:50. Serving as pallbearers will be Rusty Byrd, Teddy Ford, Brian Mitchell, Chris Parks, Scotty Robbins and Frank Walters. Honorary pallbearers will be George Gray Jr., John Kellner, Kevan Hite, Steve Hite, Jimmy Joe Mitchell, Kelly Mitchell and Reid Ratliff.
Memorial contributions may be made in Linda's name to the Harmony Baptist Church Building Fund in care of Harmony Baptist Church.
