Melvin Lewis, 77, died suddenly in his sleep before 6 a.m. Sunday. He had been ill for the past month, when he suffered a slight stroke.
Mr. Lewis was born August 18, 1877, in Hamilton County, near Noblesville, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Marlon Lewis. He married Ms. Rosie Baker in Richland Township, January 25, 1899. They had recently celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary.
The family had moved into Alexandria from a farm in 1920. They have resided at their residence on Canal St. since 1929. Mr. Lewis was practically a lifelong resident of Madison County. He was a farmer most of his life and was employed at Aladdin Industries. He also served the city of Alexandria as city water engineer.
Surviving are the widow; three sons, Guy (Phala) Lewis, former mayor of Alexandria; Maurice (Pauline) Lewis of Alexandria; and Earl (Louise) Lewis of Elwood; one daughter, Beulah (Willis) Marlow, Alexandria; a brother, Charles Lewis, Alexandria; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
The body was taken to the Davis and Stricler Funeral Home, where services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, conducted by the Rev. Jack Albertson, pastor of the First Christian Church. Burial will be at Park View Cemetery in the family plot.
