Consort Queen of Austria. Descendant of the Habsburg branch of Spain, the eldest daughter of the second marriage of King Philip IV, she married (1666) her uncle Leopold I, Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire. The marriage, opposed for a long time by her father for dynastic reasons relating to the succession to the throne of Spain, was desired strongly by the Austrian sovereign in the absence of heirs. It was particularly happy and prolific but short-lived. However, none of the children survived. She, like her husband, was passionate about music but is above all remembered for her almost obsessive religiosity and on the edge of superstition. In fact, after a negative outcome of her pregnancy (1669), she induced her husband to expel the Jews from Vienna (1670) as they were held responsible for the calamities that occurred to the royal family. Margarete Theresia died, after her last pregnancy, from lung complications from cancer.
