From the National Parks website of Soldier Details, William Quarles is listed as a private in the 18th Regiment, Company G, of the Confederate Army in Arkansas, on film number M376, Roll 19. From the Fold 3 website his records show he was captured at Port Hudson, Louisiana on July 9, 1863. He was paroled and released July 11, 1863, also from Port Hudson, LA. Number of Roll:72 (652)
Will's parents and siblings had escaped from Arkansas to Fort Scott, Kansas as refugees from the Civil War. William joined them at Leavenworth, Kansas after the war ended.
William James married Mary Angeline Chinn October 22, 1865 in Kansas. In 1867 they settled on a farm 2 1/2 miles north of Dadeville, Missouri.
April 22, 1897, The Greenfield Vidette --- WJ Quarles died at his home near Cedarville, Thursday, of cancer, and was buried at the Morris burying ground, four miles east of Dadeville, yesterday. Mr. Quarles was one of the pioneer settlers of the vicinity of Cedarville, and had formed an extensive acquaintance and many friends. He had a number of relatives about Dadeville, among them are Mesdames ME Morrow, K Dinwiddie, TA Maze, M Tefertiller, sisters. He was a member of the Christian Church and had been superintendent of the same Sunday school about 15 years. --- Dadeville Rustic
