U.S. Congressman. In 1855, he immigrated to the United States with his parents, settled near Plymouth, Ohio, then moved to Charlotte, Michigan, in 1867, where he engaged in agricultural pursuits and worked as a mason. He graduated from the University of Michigan in 1879, from the law department in 1880, was admitted to the bar in 1882 and commenced to practice law in Detroit, Michigan. He was prosecuting attorney of Eaton County (1885-88), president of the First National Bank of Charlotte in 1898, member of the board of aldermen in 1903 and a member of the Michigan State constitutional convention in 1908. In 1911, he was elected as a Republican to the Sixty-second Congress and to the next four succeeding Congresses, serving until 1921. He was elected to the Sixty-seventh Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the death of William H. Frankhouser, was reelected to the Sixty-eighth Congress and died while in office at age 70.
