Dolly Barlar Davis, 82, born Jan 8, 1926, died Sunday, Aug. 24, 2008. She was the daughter of the late Thomas Jefferson and Lela May Coffee Barlar of McCains/Culleoka, Tenn. She was preceded in death by her husband John H. Davis Jr.; one sister Ruby Lee Barlar Austin (d. 2000) of Muscle Shoals, Alabama & a brother Claxton "Buddy" Barlar (d. 1963) of McCains Tennessee.
After schooling at Mynders & Columbia Central High School, Dolly served during the late great world war (WWII) in the effort in Oak Ridge Tennessee developing atomic weaponery, but was of course at the time like all the workers unaware of what she was working on.
Later she was transferred to Washington DC to work as a war transcriptionist where she met her husband.
She and her husband eventually moved back to Wilson NC where her husband spent his productive life in the Grocery business. He was a store manager of Winn-Dixie for many years and later other stores while Dolly became a homemaker.
Survivors include one daughter, Donna Boykin and son-in-law, Ronnie, of Elm City; granddaughter, Cari Elizabeth Green and husband, Bryan, of Clayton; one sister, Pauline Virginia Barlar Thurman, of Culleoka, Tenn.; and several nieces and nephews who are Royce Thurman, Wanda Thurman Jones, Joyce Austin Grigsby, Warren Austin, Wayne Austin, Ernie Austin, Mary Austin Gregory, Ameree Austin Stancil Young.
Mrs. Davis was a long-time member at Hornes United Methodist Church, serving as church pianist and organist for a good many years and later as part of the adult choir. She was a member of the Nurture Committee and the Joy team. At home, she could be found working in her yard with her flowers or going for outings with friends.
Visitation was Wednesday, Aug. 27, 2008, at 2 p.m. at Thomas-Yelverton Funeral Home. The funeral followed at 3 p.m. in the Thomas-Yelverton Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. David Heath, and the Rev. Kris Williams officiating. Burial followed in the Evergreen Memorial Park. Friends were also received at 802 N. Parker St., Elm City. Flowers were welcome or memorials made to Hornes United Methodist Church, 165 W. Hornes Church Road, Wilson, NC 27896. Condolences were made to www.thomasyelverton.com.
