Death Takes "Dick" Wolfe Business Man: Owned Much Real Estate
Richard Wolfe, 76, one of the oldest and most prominent business men of Ottawa, died at 8 o'clock this morning at the home of his sister, Mrs. Margaret Farrell, 1101 Clinton street, of a complication of disease augmented by old age. Mr. Wolfe had been ill in bed for the past seven weeks. Last summer he was confined to the City hospital with illness for five months and at that time his life was dispaired of, but while he rallied from that illness he never fully recovered from the effects of it. Mr. Wolfe was born in county Kerry Ireland, the son of Richard and Mary (Carney) Wolfe and when a small child came with his parents to this country where they settled on a farm in Deer Park township. Later the family moved to LaSalle, where as a young man, Mr. Wolfe worked for the United Express company for a few years. He came to Ottawa in 1868 and in partnership with a cousin, Daniel Wolfe, embarked in a wholesale business, located on LaSalle street, on the present site of the C.W. Irion dry goods store. He conducted his business at this store until 1881, when the present brick building was erected and the wooden building located on that space were removed to the corner of LaSalle and Lafayette streets. ìDickî Wolfe, as he was familarly known to all Ottawa, maintained offices in a one-story wooden structure on LaSalle street during the years he had been in this city. From a comparatively poor young man Mr. Wolfe rose to the position of one of the keenest and best known business men of this city, branching out into the real estate field where he became the owner of farms in Illinois, Iowa and Florida. He was at the time of his death a director of the People's Trust & Savings bank, of this city, a director of the Ottawa Building Homestead & Savings Association, a director of the United Telephone Co., and a stockbholder in a number of business enterprises. He was a large real estate holder in this county and was well known to persons in Ottawa, LaSalle, Streator and the surrounding country. ìDickî Wolfe, known to many people as "Uncle Dick" never married and was a simple, unassuming man, loving the humbler walks of life, rather than the fleshpots. He was a devout Catholic and was ever ready to further and help his religion and its causes. His philanthropies were great, but his charities were of the real kind that were never divulged to the world. During the war he was a heavy investor in Liberty bonds and War Savings stamps. He is survived by two sisters - Mrs. Margaret Farrell and Mrs. Sarah Corcoran and one brother, James Wolfe, all of this city, and a number of nieces and nephews. The funeral will be held at 9 oíclock Wednesday morning from St. Columba church. Burial will be made in St. Columba cemetery.
