In 1941 he got his hand in the fan of a truck, motor. It cut off the last knuckles of 3 fingers if his right hand. 0ne was sewn back on the others, stitched up.
Ha bought his dozer In 1944 and, in 1945 moved to Crockett in Houston County. He and Leola bought a farm and there they stayed until 1953. They then bought a cafe In Killeen to get easier work for Steve. He had had heart attack prior and had doctor’ s orders to quit heavy equipment. They sold the cafe in 1954 and moved back to Crockett. He died in his home after having 3 heart attacks and having a pacemaker put in 7 months before he died.
